…the last time Baseball’s hitters just couldn’t keep up?
It wouldn’t be accurate to say it has never been harder to get a hit in the major leagues than it is today. But it wouldn’t be that far off either.
When this week began, Major League hitters were batting a collective .239 about one-third of the way through the season.
Going back to 1898, there has only been one season in which the MLB-wide batting average finished lower--1968, when the league batted a record-low .237 and there were fewer runs scored than in any full season in the Expansion Era (since 1961).
1968 is remembered historically as “The Year of the Pitcher.” It’s also the season when people around baseball realized something had to change.
